Shuja Jamal practises in environment and planning law, with experience advising on transport infrastructure, major projects and renewable energy matters.

Prior to joining Bugden Allen, Shuja spent 2.5 years at Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer, where he worked in the firm’s Environment and Planning team. His practice involved advising on complex infrastructure and development projects across both public and private sectors.

Before entering legal practice, Shuja held senior policy, advocacy and research roles across government and international organisations. He worked at Afghanistan’s National Security Council, led policy and advocacy at the Jesuit Refugee Service, and spent several years as a researcher at Human Rights Watch. He is also a co-author of a book published by Oxford University Press examining the fall of republican Afghanistan.

Shuja holds a Juris Doctor from Melbourne Law School, a Master of Public Policy from Georgetown University as a Fulbright Scholar, and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Economics from Berea College in Kentucky.
