Phil Pennington has been practicing law in the areas of strata and community title and commercial property for over 35 years.

After admission in Queensland in 1987, Phil has worked for both boutique and national law firms in Queensland, including a stint in local Government in the UK. Prior to joining BAGL, his most recent roles were as a Partner of a small Queensland practice which merged into a national practice, and most recently a manager of a team of lawyers in a Queensland State Government agency. His Government work saw him oversee a number of State Government commercial leases, along with managing a conveyancing team.

Over the years Phil has acted for developers, major companies, bodies corporates and committees in commercial property and strata and community titles. His development work included preparing JV agreements, project conveyancing and developing master sales contracts including by-laws for major projects. He also has extensive strata experience, advising body corporate committees in managing all aspects of their duties, from by-law updates, building repairs, caretaker matters and other advisory work. Phil has managed numerous strata title disputes, including obtaining a successful result in both the Queensland Supreme Court and the Queensland Court of Appeal for a Fortitude Valley development constituted under the Mixed-Use Development Act.

Phil holds a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Queensland and in recent times undertook a module of QUT’s Public Sector Management Program. Between 2009 and 2011 Phil was a part-time sessional member of the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal’s Occupational, Building and Construction Division where he mediated and adjudicated disputes between builders and consumers. From 2002 to 2007 Phil was a member of the Queensland Law Society’s Banking and Finance Law Committee, and from 2007 to 2017 was a member of the Society’s Property Development Law Committee where he was involved in advocating for changes to draft legislation and regular updates of the State’s standard property contracts.

Phil is a Special Counsel in our Brisbane office.
